While working on various web projects we also use free hosting for both projects with static pages as projects with WordPress and plugins. The following is a brief overview of our experiences which some webmasters may help if one is looking for free web hosting.

WordPress runs but with limitations, especially PHP mail() is disabled (can be purchased, but then it’s no more free)
some plugins do not work caused by restrictions
also a plugin using smtp of gmail (to solve the mail problem) does not work cause smtp and fopen() are also disabled

Frihost can’t longer recommended!
I was using Frihost – and it deleted the blog without prior notice. The host requires activities within their forums – inactivity leads to deletion of the hosted websites!
